So winter is here with a vengeance. The past week, we've had several days of temperatures hovering right around -40 Celsius and colder, and that's without the wind chill. However, it's been sunny for four or five hours each day. (We're at the 62nd parallel, so our days are still pretty short.) Our solar panels are helping to power the house in addition to the generator. You know, we keep our wood stove packed, and it runs 24/7, pretty much from the end of October through the end of April each year. And we're thankful we have a good firewood supply this year, although when it's this cold, it always feels like our wood shed empties faster than it should. Here's a quick rundown of our newest posts. From the blogPopular on PinterestOur most popular pin this week - is a tie. Here they are: This is a new pin for an older post that gets many views every January. And this one is a new pin for a newly updated post. Just goes to show that I'm not the only one daydreaming about this stuff in the middle of winter. And if you aren't on Pinterest, here are post 1 and post 2. Coming up...This week, I'm (still) working on the posts about the best indoor plants, making homemade goat treats, and how to clean a cast iron skillet. Until next time! Sarita (P.S. ICYMI, last week, I shared the best homesteading blogs of 2024, dating cast iron pieces and off-grid power systems. See the newsletter HERE)

An Off Grid Life Hi Reader, There's something about a deep January freeze that makes you realize how much you rely on "the grid." Whether you’re still dreaming of that cabin in Montana (or Alberta) or you're keeping things running in the suburbs, winter is our best teacher for resilience. It’s the perfect time to audit your supplies and your skills. Do you have enough firewood to feed your wood stove? Are your emergency candles easy to find? Is your "family preparedness and survival" plan...
An Off Grid Life Hi Reader, 🎉 Happy New Year! I hope you had a restful break and a chance to breathe after the holiday rush. If you’re anything like me, you’re looking at the calendar and feeling that "this is the year" energy. But instead of the usual high-pressure resolutions, in 2026, let’s focus on building the foundation that actually leads to the life you want. This is something I didn't do when I left my life as a suburban banker to live off the grid over 12 years ago. Looking back, I...
An Off Grid Life Hey there, We're in the final stretch before Christmas. Your to-do lists may seem long, and the pressure is high. But I want to remind you of something: You are doing a good job. Your kids (or grandkids) won't remember whether the house was perfectly spotless or whether the wrapping paper matched. They will remember the feeling of home you created. They will remember that you were present. Tonight, try to turn off the noise. Light a candle. Read a book. Simplicity is where...
